I’m never quite sure whether being the only foreigner in the team is a good thing or a bad one. of course, every time it rains I get asked if I’m getting homesick, and I rarely get invited to lunch because people assume all English people eat at lunchtimeis sandwiches. But I’m also treated as a walking dictionary / guide book for anyone who’s working on an English document or taking a weekend in London.
For a while I’ve wondered why the directors all seem very friendly towards me when I’ve only really had dealings with one of them, and everyone else in the building seems to despise them.
It became somewhat clearer today: Turns out that the company is pitching for several large contracts in the UK, and the various different departments are actually pitching against each other for ownership of the projects. And as the only English speaking project manager, I guess I’m probably quite a useful person to have around.
Maybe the bosses will invite me out to lunch after all…
