Apéro etiquette

With Tuesday being a Bank Holiday, I was invited to ‘aperos’ at Jacques’ place. This is usually quite a big deal in france, as it’s kind of a formal offer of friendship, and you need to get the etiquette right if you want to get invited back again. So I had a bit of a search on the internet and was instructed to take either flowers or a bottle.

As it was Jacques and not his missus who invited me, I went for a half decent single malt, but I’m never buying flowers for anyone ever again. Apparently, (over here at least) each flower has a different meaning.

The site, Bottin Mondain has got a list. I won’t bore you with them all, but a couple of samples:

Anemoné – “Don’t abandon me”

Lily – “My love for you is growing”

or how about Pink Geranium – “I’m bored of you”.

Anyway, the night turned into one almighty bender, finishing with us sitting on the “terrasse” (that’s the outsidey bit) of a café at 6am drinking Champagne. Christ knows how I got home, but the next thing I knew it was 9pm Tuesday night…
